Internship Grants
Current undergraduate and graduate students who are declared majors in a program in the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences or in International Relations may apply for an internship grant. The grants are funded through the Marjorie Pay Hinckley Endowed Chair in Social Work and the Social Sciences and the Mary Lou Fulton Chair in the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences. Individual grants up to $1,600 are available each academic semester (fall, winter, and spring/summer). These are competitive awards based on financial need, the quality of the internship, and the degree to which the internship helps support the applicant’s academic and career goals.
Application Deadlines
Fall Semester - July 31 by 12 Noon
Winter Semester – November 30 by 12 Noon
Spring/Summer Semester - March 31 by 12 Noon
It is recommended that students meet with their internship coordinator before completing the online internship application.
Choosing the correct internship coordinator
Internship applications will not be considered without an evaluation by an internship coordinator. You should meet with the coordinator who is responsible for the internship you are interested in, and not necessarily the coordinator for your department. For example, an Economics major who is interested in an internship with the Utah State Legislature should meet with Robert Goss, the coordinator of legislative internships. If you are uncertain about who is the right coordinator, visit with your department coordinator who can provide the appropriate direction.
The online internship grant application contains a dropdown box with the name and email address of each of the college's internship coordinators. Once your grant application is submitted an automatic email will be sent to the coordinator who will provide an evaluation.
Internship coordinator evaluation
The internship coordinator will evaluate the following:
- The quality of the internship experience for the student.
- The contribution of the internship to the student’s career and academic goals.
Internship acceptance
Before applying for the internship grant, the applicant is required to meet with the appropriate internship coordinator and have applied for an internship. However, an applicant is not required to be accepted for the internship in order to be considered for a grant. If you receive information that you have been accepted for your internship, inform the coordinator. If your plans change or the internship is denied, please contact
patricia_wilson@byu.edu to have your application removed, so others may be considered.
If you are awarded an Internship Grant
A committee member will notify you by email if you have been selected. The funds will be credited to your University account at the beginning of the semester. You must complete the internship designated on your application and be enrolled for internship course credit during the period of the internship. After you complete your internship, you are required to write a report which includes photos of you at your internship, with your co-workers, or engaged in the work.
